UK bank holidays 2027: the dates, the working days, and the gaps worth planning for

October 2, 2026 · Guides, Culture

Every UK bank holiday in 2027 for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, plus the working days in each quarter and the 17-week stretch with no bank holiday at all.

Most bank holiday pages give you a list. That's fine if you just want to know when Easter is.

If you're planning a year of leave cover, recognition and team energy, the list isn't the useful bit. The useful bit is where the gaps are, and 2027 has a big one.

Quick answer: England and Wales get eight bank holidays in 2027, Scotland gets nine and Northern Ireland gets ten. There are 261 weekdays in the year. The dates people usually get caught out by are Easter, which is very early at the end of March, and Christmas Day falling on a Saturday, which pushes the Christmas bank holidays to Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December.

UK bank holidays 2027: England and Wales

  • New Year's Day - Friday 1 January
  • Good Friday - Friday 26 March
  • Easter Monday - Monday 29 March
  • Early May bank holiday - Monday 3 May
  • Spring bank holiday - Monday 31 May
  • Summer bank holiday - Monday 30 August
  • Christmas Day (substitute) - Monday 27 December
  • Boxing Day (substitute) - Tuesday 28 December

Christmas Day falls on a Saturday in 2027 and Boxing Day on a Sunday, so both bank holidays move to the following Monday and Tuesday.

Bank holidays 2027: Scotland

Scotland gets nine, and three of them differ from England and Wales.

  • New Year's Day - Friday 1 January
  • 2 January (substitute) - Monday 4 January, since 2 January falls on a Saturday
  • Good Friday - Friday 26 March
  • Early May bank holiday - Monday 3 May
  • Spring bank holiday - Monday 31 May
  • Summer bank holiday - Monday 2 August, the first Monday in August rather than the last
  • St Andrew's Day - Tuesday 30 November
  • Christmas Day (substitute) - Monday 27 December
  • Boxing Day (substitute) - Tuesday 28 December

Note Easter Monday isn't a bank holiday in Scotland, and the summer one lands four weeks earlier than it does south of the border. If you run a multi-site team across both, August is the month that catches people out.

Bank holidays 2027: Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland gets all eight England and Wales dates, plus two more:

  • St Patrick's Day - Wednesday 17 March
  • Battle of the Boyne - Monday 12 July

St Patrick's Day falling midweek in 2027 is worth noting early, because it's harder to cover than a Monday.

How many working days are there in 2027?

There are 261 weekdays in 2027. Take off the bank holidays and you're at 253 working days in England and Wales, 252 in Scotland and 251 in Northern Ireland, before anyone's annual leave.

By quarter, in weekdays:

  • Q1 (Jan to Mar): 64
  • Q2 (Apr to Jun): 65
  • Q3 (Jul to Sep): 66
  • Q4 (Oct to Dec): 66

Q1 is the short one, and it's shorter still in practice because it absorbs both New Year and the whole of Easter. If you set quarterly targets, that's worth knowing in advance rather than in March.

The gap nobody plans for

Here's the thing a calendar page won't tell you.

In England and Wales, after the summer bank holiday on Monday 30 August, the next one is Monday 27 December.

That's 17 weeks with no bank holiday at all. Nearly four months.

It's the longest unbroken stretch in the year by some distance. The second longest is the 13 weeks between the spring bank holiday on 31 May and that August one, which is the run most people already know about as the summer slog.

So 2027 has two long stretches back to back: 13 weeks to the end of August, then 17 weeks to Christmas. From the start of June to the end of December, there's exactly one bank holiday.

If you've ever wondered why team energy sags in October and November, that's a large part of it. Nobody has had a long weekend since August and the next one is a long way off.

What to do with that

Put something in the autumn. The 17-week run from September to Christmas is where a company day off, an early finish or a genuine thank-you does the most work, because nothing else is breaking up the calendar. It's also the cheapest time to be noticed, because so few businesses think about it. It's the single most common gap we see on Huggg when companies map out their recognition year.

Watch the Easter and Q1 squeeze. Easter is very early in 2027, landing 26 to 29 March. Anything you'd normally schedule for a quiet late March is competing with it, and Q1 only has 64 weekdays to begin with.

Plan the August split if you're multi-site. Scotland takes 2 August, England and Wales take 30 August. Four weeks apart, same nominal holiday, and it affects cover, payroll and anyone coordinating across both. If you're marking either date across sites, Huggg sends as a link rather than a parcel, so the two dates don't become two logistics exercises.

Publish the Christmas rota early. Christmas Day on a Saturday means the bank holidays land on Monday 27 and Tuesday 28 December, which makes the week between Christmas and New Year unusually awkward to staff. Our guide to the Christmas rota covers how to allocate it without it becoming personal.

Don't let the year end be the only moment you mark. This is the one that gets skipped. In the Huggg Christmas Gift Index, a survey of 500 UK working adults in August 2026, 31% said their employer gives them nothing at Christmas at all. If December is your only planned gesture and a third of people get nothing even then, the autumn stretch is running on empty.

A 2027 planning checklist

Worth doing once, in January, and then forgetting about:

  • Bank holiday dates in the shared calendar for all four nations, not just your head office
  • Quarterly targets sense-checked against 64, 65, 66, 66 weekdays rather than assuming they're equal
  • Leave policy checked for how bank holidays are treated, especially for part-time staff, since the days fall unevenly across weekdays in 2027
  • Something deliberate scheduled into the September-to-December stretch (Huggg can automate the recurring ones so they don't depend on someone remembering)
  • Christmas rota published by early November
  • Multi-site cover agreed for the 2 August and 30 August split
